FORTY percent of the first batch of senior high school graduates (SHS) or about 540,000 nationwide are expected to go into technical vocational study after graduation and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (Tesda) is currently preparing for the forthcoming high demand for skills training.
Tesda National Technical Committee co-vice chair Rolando Dela Torre said there is an estimate 1.3 million SHS graduates expected next year. About 60 percent are expected to go into academic track and 40 percent of this will go into technical vocational study.
Dela Torre said this is something that the government should prepare for.
He suggested that each region should be able to determine the specific skills training needed and would be in demand in their area.
He added skills available for training in Tesda are actually from A-W.
He said a partnership between the Department of Education (Deped), Commission on High Education (Ched) and Tesda is needed as the two earlier mentioned agencies have bigger national funding as compared to Tesda alone.
Dela Torre said Tesda would need assistance as well. He also said there is a need for a direct partnership with private sectors and private schools.
“We have resources but the least resources or the least budget is that of Tesda’s. So if we help are able to help each other, it would generate more employment,” he said.
