FIVE men were caught for spider fighting in District 7, Barangay Pulpogan, Consolacion town, Cebu, around 3 p.m., Thursday, August 31.
Operatives arrested Junel Caballero Tudtud, Jose Alphy Soco Alivio, Rolly Villaban Estule, Michael Bihay Larot, and Debabao Villamor.
Police were able to seize a small table used as "roydahan," P200 bet money, and eight boxes with 78 spiders.
Supt. Mina Domingo, town police chief, said the fate of the arachnids depends on the prosecutor who will handle the inquest proceeding of the five men who were caught by her personnel for illegal gambling.
“We will use these (spiders) as evidence against the suspects. It will be up to the fiscal if we will release the spiders,” she said.
Before the arrest, a resident called the police station attention, complaining on the gamblers' noise.
According to Consolacion police, spider fighting is staged between female web-weavers. The game begins by placing two spiders at opposite ends of a stick or a string.
The spiders are then prodded to move along the sticks that are thin enough to ensure that the spiders have no choice but to meet. (KAL/VoxPop Cebu)
