WITH the objective of promoting road safety for motorcycle drivers in the highway, Koronadal City will hold the 23rd annual convention of the National Federation of Motorcycle Clubs on April 22 to 30, expecting around 5,000 motorcycle participants from different parts of the Philippines.
"It's really a fact that there are many accidents involving motorcycles, resulting to casualties or injuries. Motorcycle users are more prone to accidents than the four-wheeled vehicles. Basing on the sales of the motorcycle dealers, there are more buyers of motors than four-wheeled vehicles also. That’s why we have the advocacy to call for safety and proper courtesy on the part of the motorcycle drivers," Koronadal City Information Officer Judith Amido said.
She added even if South Cotabato had already implemented speed limits lower than 60 kilometers per hour, there are still motorcycle-related accidents recorded.
Amido said a three-day conference is scheduled in line with the convention that will tackle about safety riding and reorientation on road rules and regulations. Speakers of the symposia will be officials from the Land Transportation Office in Koronadal City.
Skills training will also be conducted in the conference wherein the drivers will be taught the proper handling of motorcycles, proper driving and riding, and even small engine troubleshooting.
The National Federation of Motorcycle Clubs currently has 369 federation members or around 10,000 individual members nationwide.
Aside from promoting the safety among motorcycle riders, the event will also attempt to break three Guinness Book of World Records events.
"The biggest we wanted to achieve this year, which any other convention had not achieved, is beating some of the Guinness Book of World Records. This is for three events: Largest Parade of Motorcycles, Most Engines Started Simultaneously, and Most Motorcycle Horns Sounded Simultaneously," Amido said.
India holds the current record of Largest Parade of Motorcycles with 1,700 participants while Yamaha Philippines holds the Most Engines Started Simultaneously and Most Motorcycle Horns Sounded Simultaneously awards with 1,400 participants.
Amido said they expect around 2,500 participants to take part in the attempt to break the records so they are confident that they will be able to surpass them.
