THE Assumption College of Davao (ACD) Warriors still found a reason to celebrate after beating Holy Child College of Davao Reds, 85-76, to capture the junior 1 division crown of the recently-concluded Gaisano Grand Cup basketball tournament held at the Gaisano Grand Citimall SkyGym.
ACD's win came on the heels of failing to defend its National Basketball Training Center (NBTC) Davao title with a finals loss to Ateneo de Davao University Blue Knights.
Paul Malano and BJ Sumugat canned 20 and 15 points, respectively, for the Warriors coached by Rollie Sancho. Nard Salvame, who made 14 baskets, was hailed season most valuable player.
Salvame, however, joined teammate AJ Royo, Kent Santillan of Davao Jones Academy, John Amora of Ford Academy of Arts and HCCD's Vince Petdeo Cuajao in the Mythical Five.
Assistant coach Tristan Balino, in an interview with Sun.Star Davao, said they were all determined to capture the title considering their NBTC loss.
"Buti nalang naka-recover emotionally and physically yung mga players (Good thing the players have recovered emotionally and physically)," Balino said, citing the Warriors for stepping up after key players Sumugat and Cris Vistal committed crucial turnovers.
Balino thanked the school, teachers, students and especially the parents who never failed to support the team.
"We also dedicate this title to our players who were not eligble to play anymore," he said, pertaining to AJ Heje, Judd Omana, Jam Bandalan and Gab Larrazaga.
ACD was also composed of Jory Velarde, Rene Yucamo, Carl Gudmalin, Kevin Caharian, Kent Cabelis, Kent Aying and Al Positos. (ABM)
