Agriculture office intensifies Riceponsible campaign

THE Department of Agriculture (DA) is giving more tips for consumers and farmers on responsible rice consumption as part of its “Be Riceponsible” advocacy campaign.

Be Riceponsible, at www.bericeponsible.com , aims to inform everybody, particularly the consumers, on how they can help the country achieve rice-sufficiency.

DA information officer James Earl Ogatis said the agency is sharing to the public the goodness of rice, especially brown rice.

“Much more that we are celebrating this November, the Rice awareness Month, we encourage everyone to support our campaign,” Ogatis said.

“If you are a consumer, do not waste even a single grain of rice, eat brown rice as well and mix it with other staples like corn and camote,” he said.

He said along with this, the consumer should thank and appreciate the rice farmers as a form of valuing their produce.

“If you are a farmer, plant rice and adopt recommended technologies that help you increase your farm yield and your income,” Ogatis said.

The DA also called on policymakers to institutionalize the availability and default serving of half cup of rice to prevent wastage and give consumers more options.

“They can also help promote the production and serving of healthier regular milled rice, brown rice and rice mixed with other staples,” Ogatis said.

DA said its Brown4good Challenge is extended until December 5, so posting pictures of brown rice meals on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, is still encouraged.

Brown4good Challenge is a social media propaganda that promotes the consumption of brown rice. (PIA)
