AT SOME point in your working life, you will come across a co-worker that will piss you off and even has the capability to turn your supposed to be heavenly working environment into a hellhole.
Perhaps it is their projection of themselves that seem to display arrogance or it could be their envy that he or she can be at par with you or it is probably their frustrations that are displaced to you. Oh, arrogant co-workers just abound everywhere and you simply cannot get rid of them.
On Monday, November 14, I have interviewed six people about their insights on arrogant co-workers. They have very concrete views and similar experiences and I would like to share it with you today. This may already be familiar and true to you too that had already pushed your patience to the limits.
The Power Hungry.
The saddest thing is when you measure your life’s joy and productivity through your position in the workplace. These are people who are not comfortable working as subordinates. Their success is tantamount to seeing their names on top of the organizational chart, that is, to be always in an executive meeting and busy with signing papers. They seem to exist only just to critique her or his people’s output without first checking whether they have done at least a bit of your accomplishments.
And what makes it worst is when one acts like he or she can do better than you when for God’s sake, she or he can’t even write his or her thoughts in words using correct grammar and can’t even speak in public with confidence. “Hindi lang posisyon ang kailangan nang tao.”
The Bully.
They come in different directions. He or she might be a person very close to the organization's proprietor or the top management. They can simply make jokes and derogatory remarks in your face and even behind your back without remorse. They are those who simply do not appreciate all your inputs and outputs even if these are of great contributions to others. Also, they do not fear being reprimanded because they are confident that it will not happen to them. “Parang nakasandal kasi sa pader.” You are expected to understand them until death!
The Know-it-all.
Oh, they know everything – from letters to numbers. They always have something to say on things whether it is tangible or not. They will tell you what is right or wrong. They can even foresee research results that have not been conducted yet. They can challenge Aristotle, Mao Tse Tung, and all the great men but whenever their strong opinions are found without basis and power, they will simply retreat with a smile as if nothing happens! However, in the following days they will still feel that they are the most highly knowledgeable people. “Mahiya ka naman, pag may time.”
The Parasite.
These are the always dependent workers. They usually rely on others in everything. They cannot just complete a task on their own and they always want to be accompanied by others. When they eat, somebody should be with them or they would prefer not to eat instead. They rejoice in group works and loathe individual tasks. They would always use sickness, emotional instability, among others, as an excuse just to avoid work and responsibilities. They exploit others but do not give anything in return. “Matuto ka naman magbigay.”
It takes bravery and courage to handle arrogant co-workers. When you are constantly with them, they seem to suck your energy and cause you to shed some tears till and drain you emotionally. They say that to live a life without stress is to remove the stressor. So, how do you get rid of them?
The reality is that you can’t remove them in the workplace. They are present everywhere and will continue to exist. So, try to take the situation positively and remember that Godly things last and evil things end. Yes, arrogant co-workers are everywhere to destroy you but your powerful God is everywhere to protect you!
