THE Bacolod City Council has approved a resolution expressing its opposition to the proposed imposition of tax on fuel products.
The resolution, authored by Councilor Caesar Distrito, chairperson of committee on laws, was approved during the regular session Friday.
It was addressed to the Senate president, the House Speaker, and chairpersons of the committee on ways and means of both the House of Representatives and the Senate.
The resolution stated that the Department of Finance proposed to impose a P6 per liter tax on diesel fuel as well as cooking gas and bunker fuel used to generate electricity while a tax of P 4.35 to P 10 per liter was proposed to be imposed on gasoline.
The proposal was already submitted to the House of Representatives.
Distrito said the move is seemingly anti-poor which is not in accordance with the policy direction of the Duterte administration in pursuing a human approach for development and uplifting the social and economic conditions of the masses.
“The imposition of tax on fuel will affect most of our constituents particularly those who depend so much on public transportation, the public jeepney drivers, and those who are living below the poverty line,” he said.
Distrito added that the Duterte administration should not impose taxes that will significantly affect the living conditions of poor Filipinos.
“The government should initiate policies that will increase the income of the poor and to ease their daily burdens,” he further said. (MAP)
