BAGUIO City Councilor Lilia Fariñas is seeking to use Baguio City hall as an art gallery to feature works of local artists.
In an ordinance, Fariñas said the move will not only fill the walls of the city hall with art but also provide benefits for the artists.
“More importantly, artists will have a the chance to showcase and sell their works in a public and well visited venue, with the city government providing a means to promote their talent and to augment artists means of livelihood, all at the same time,” the lady lawmaker said in his proposed measure.
City Hall was rebuilt in 1949 and has been declared by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts as a heritage site as Farinas added there can be no better declaration of support by the City Government for artists and the arts than allowing them to exhibit their works in the lobby of the building when possible and along the empty walls of its public hall as a viewing gallery for the public and interested buyers of art.
The ordinance aims to declare City Hall to have a dual function of a visual art museum.
Fariñas in her proposed law has tasked the General Services Office to lead the implementation of the visual arts center at city hall and has allotted P300,000 for its maintenance.
The ordinance has passed its first reading.
