BARANGAY 18 was adjudged champion in the street and arena dance competition and bagged all the four special awards during the 38th MassKara Festival highlights at the Bacolod public plaza Sunday, October 22.
The champion team, which performed right before President Rodrigo Duterte delivered a speech, received P100,000 in cash and a trophy, bested 13 other barangay-participants.
Barangay 18, with choreographers Joedem Casabuena and Mark Philip Ramirez, was also named Best in Mask, Concept, Costume, and in Choreography, receiving P7,000 for each award.
Barangay Punta Taytay was chosen first runner-up, and received P75,000 in cash and a trophy. Barangay Mandalagan was awarded second runner-up, with P50,000 and a trophy.
Barangay Mandalagan was also chosen Best in Cheer and received P5,000.
Barangay Tangub was adjudged third runner-up and received P30,000 in cash and a trophy. Barangay Alijis was fourth runner-up with P20,000 and a trophy.
Barangay 18 trainer Casabuena was also the choreographer of grand slam winner Barangay Granada last year. After winning for the third time in 2016, Granada stopped joining the competition this year.
Casabuena also choreographed for Romanito P. Maravilla Sr. National High School that bagged the championship along with the four special awards in the schools category Saturday.
Mayor Evelio Leonardia thanked all the barangays and schools that participated in street and arena dance competitions.
He said that every year, the street and arena dance participants keep on improving.
“This year’s MassKara is a success because it is the people who deserved the credit for it. Everybody plays a role. I am very happy and very proud to be a mayor of such a great city,” Leonardia said.
Festival director Eli Francis Tajanlangit said the performance of the participants both in the barangay and school categories were fantastic.
Barangay 22 was adjudged champion in electric MassKara Performing Floats competition, receiving P50,000 in cash and a trophy.
Barangay 5 was named first runner-up, with P30,000 and a trophy while Barangay Singcang-Airport placed second runner-up, with P20,000 and a trophy.
In the schools category, Apolinario Mabini Elementary School and Romanito P. Maravilla Sr. National High School bagged the champion’s trophies Saturday.
In elementary category, Education and Training Center School-I (ETCS) was first runner-up; Luis B. Puentevella Elementary School, second runner-up; and Bata Elementary School-II, third runner-up.
Apolinario Mabini Elementary School, with choreographer Ramon Salvador Macainan, was also adjudged Best in Choreography and Best in Concept while Bata Elementary School and ETCS-I won the Best in Mask and Best in Costume, respectively.
In high school category, Paglaum Village National High School was first runner-up; Bacolod City National High School, second runner-up; and Domingo Lacson National High School, third runner-up.
Romanito P. Maravilla Sr. National High School, with choreographers Joedem Casabuena, Adriana Arca, and Lyra Dy, was adjudged as best in costume, mask, concept, and choreography. They received a total of P20,000 for the special awards.
The champions received P70,000; first runner-up, P50,000; second runner-up, P30,000; and third runner-up P20,000 as well as trophies.
Meanwhile, Barangay 22 was adjudged champion in electric MassKara Performing Floats competition, receiving P50,000 in cash and a trophy.
Barangay 5 was named first runner-up, with P30,000 and a trophy while Barangay Singcang-Airport placed second runner-up, with P20,000 and a trophy.
