ASIDE from going after tax evaders, the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) Region 12 will also strengthen its watch over erring employees especially those doing corruption practices, its top official said.
Revenue Region 12 Director Eduardo Pagulayan Jr. told VoxPop Bacolod the BIR recognizes the vital role of employees in ensuring efficient tax collection.
Pagulayan said it cannot be denied that some employees are turning towards the wrong path thus they are keeping an eye on them.
“We already filed cases against some erring employees. Most of these cases are being submitted to the central office particularly those with penalties tantamount to suspension or dismissal,” he added.
BIR Revenue Region 12 covers Revenue District Offices (RDOs) in Bacolod City, Binalbagan town and Victorias City in Negros Occidental, Dumaguete City in Negros Oriental, and Siquijor Province.
From the total collection of P11.2 billion in 2017, the agency targets to collect P13.2 billion in the region this year.
Reaching this goal would also depend on how efficient employees are, especially in providing necessary services to the clients, not only on going after and filing cases against tax evaders.
Pagulayan said they are encouraging taxpayers to report whatever wrong doings are committed by any of the BIR employees.
Aside from under-the-table transactions and other corruption-related practices, they can also report employees not performing their jobs properly, he said.
Pagulayan said these complaints should be substantiated by proofs or evidences. “It is hard to act if these are just hearsay, employees are also entitled to their constitutional right of due process.”
Taxpayers may report through the Director’s Office at 446-3928 and 446-3925, or may coordinate with their respective Revenue District Officers.
“We can always verify these reports even though complainants won’t give their names,” Pagulayan said, assuring that “most of our employees are still serving the people and country with professionalism, integrity and competence.”
