THE legal team of Bohol Board Member Niño Rey Boniel will request for assistance from Commission on Human Rights-Central Visayas as they believe some rights of the accused were violated to extract information, a lawyer said.
Gerardo Carillo, the lawyer of Niño Rey, said the board member's counsel are still preparing for this move after the plan came up in a case conference on Saturday afternoon, June 17, in Police Station 2 in Fuente.
Niño Rey was arrested on June 8 for allegedly kidnapping and killing his wife, Bien Unido Mayor Gisela Bendong-Boniel.
He shot his wife while aboard a pump boat and threw her body off Caubian Island, Lapu-Lapu City.
As of Thursday, June 15, the body of Gisela has yet to be found.
On June 16, the lawyers of Niño Rey withdrew the petition for writ of habeas corpus they filed before a court in Talibon.
“Yes, it was withdrawn. Manifested it in open court. It was a decision reached by the legal team,” said lawyer Handel Lagunay in a text message to reporters.
The petition was filed last June 9 to let the police justify their detention of Niño Rey. (VoxPop Cebu)
