CADIZ City-Jaguar Badminton Academy and the St. John’s Institute (SJI)-United Shuttler’s Alliance came out with huge performances when they dominated the recently-staged first Tan Kek Pin Memorial Cup held at Pohang Badminton Court in Bacolod City.
The Jaguars garnered nine gold medals and six silvers while SJI got nine golds and three silvers.
Jaguar’s Kerr Longno ruled the Open men’s singles as Clarence Villaflor conquered the U14 boys singles division and added another alongside John Vincent Saturinas in the U14 boys doubles. Lanz Louise Aguila and John Mark Valenzuela dominated the U16 boys singles and U18 boys singles, respectively.
Meanwhile, Phoebe Jay Villaflor topped the U16 girls singles while has another gold medal in the U16 girls doubles with teammate Katrinamae Consing. Valerene Jane Marcial ruled the U8 girls singles as the team of Closea Jan Giabia and Roela Nicole Miravalles topped the U8 girls doubles.
Among the Cadiz City’s silver medalists included Paul Benedict Butas (U8 boys singles), Khylle Marie Agura (U12 girls single), Glesnan Aron Detios and Lovic Javier (U12 boys doubles), Lovic Javer (U12 boys singles), Bernadette Marce Gastar (U16 girls silver), and Yvonnie Maya Dema-ano (U18 girls singles).
With the victory, Jaguar coach Jordan Sun thanked Cadiz City Mayor Patrick Escalante, Councilor Owen Desuyo, and all others who supported their participation.
Winning gold medals for SJI were Mary Annika Anglo (U10 girls singles), Brendan Lui Anglo in the U12 boys singles while he had another alongside Allen Yusay in the U12 boys doubles; Mia Go (U12 girls singles), Mikaela Uy and Sophia Gustilo (U14 girls doubles), Justin Anglo and Sean de Jesus (U18 boys doubles).
Ellana Tan conquered the U18 girls singles and added another gold in the Open women’s doubles together with Mia Manguilimotan, who also won the U18 girls doubles in tandem with Pretzel Giana Ong.
Meanwhile, winning silvers for SJI were Arkexa Valens Ojera (U10 girls singles), Aeisha Chua and Charlize Linas (U10 girls doubles), and Mia Go and Abigail Santero in the U12 girls doubles.
The event was a tribute to the late Tan Kek Pin, founder of the Tan Kek Pin Memorial Cup, and served as a venue to support the development of grassroots players in the Bacolod and in the province.
Although Tan Kek Pin was more popular in basketball when his family started supporting basketball in the late 1960’s, his passion in badminton made his family decide to shift their focus on this sport.
