THE city-run JR Borja General Hospital will be adding another hospital wing to better serve the increasing number of patients.
The Cagayan de Oro City Government and Department of Health (DOH) officials Wednesday, July 19, led the groundbreaking ceremony of the P70.5 million North Wing Building funded by the Health Facilities Enhancement Program of the DOH.
The three-story building will be completed early next year.
The new building will house the hospital's business office, offices of the hospital's different departments, and a modern out-patient department, hospital chief Dr. Ramon Nery said Wednesday.
Modernizing the hospital is part of the City Government's plan to make the JR Borja hospital a level II medical facility, Nery said.
The modernization process will include the installation of the eight-bed capacity Intensive Care Unit (ICU), which will allow the city hospital to accept patients with complicated cases.
"Then from eight beds, we could expand to 20 ICU beds, we need to study to expand this kay kulang gayud ang ICU both sa public and private hospitals," Nery said.
According to hospital records, the city hospital’s occupancy rate has now increased by 300 percent with about 300 patients admitted daily, exceeding its supposed 100-patient capacity.
City Mayor Oscar Moreno pointed out the need to decongest the hospital.
He said he is close to expanding the city's medical services by building two hospitals which will serve both districts of the city.
"We do not just look at the city, we are looking at serving the whole region," he said.
