NEGROS Occidental Second District Board Member Salvador Escalante said Tuesday, August 29, the Provincial Government will give a recognition and
P50,000 incentive to Negrense teen Mary Angeline Uy Alcantara for winning a gold medal in the 2017 World Cadet Taekwondo Championships held in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt.
Alcantara, 13, who is set to come home on August 31, defeated top-rated players in the quarterfinals from India, Italy, and Ukraine. She faced Tunisia in the semi-finals and outscored Russia in the finals to win the championship during the four-day tournament held from August 24 to 27.
She was also awarded Most Valuable Player after her dominant display in the under-44kg category on August 26.
Escalante, who is acting governor this week, said the Grade 7 student of the Living Stones International School in Bacolod City will receive P30,000 for being a champion and P20,000 for bagging the MVP award.
“It’s a rare feat for a Negrense,” he added.
Escalante said the Provincial Board will pass a resolution commending and recognizing Alcantara for bringing pride to the country and the province as well.
