CCC optimistic on Senate ratification of Paris climate deal

THE Climate Change Commission (CCC) is hopeful that the Senate will ratify the Paris agreement on climate change on Wednesday afternoon.

The Senate is expected to approve on third reading the Paris climate deal when it resumes its session later.

Senator Loren Legarda, chair of Senate subcommittee on the Paris agreement, will lead the Senate concurrence of the treaty.

CCC commissioner and vice chairperson Veronica Victorio said she is expecting the ratification of Paris agreement, as it will allow the Philippines “to really have a stronger voice when it comes to international climate negotiations.”

“So we’re looking forward to that [ratification of climate pact],” she said.

President Rodrigo Duterte on February 28 signed the Paris climate pact.

The climate deal aims to hold the increase in the global temperature to “well below” two degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. (VoxPop Philippines)
