AS THE country celebrates the National Heroes Day Monday, August 28, the Cebu City Government has recognized several individuals who were considered modern day heroes.

In a short program Monday morning, the City recognized Southeast Asian Games marathon gold medalist and Cebuana pride Mary Joy Tabal for her recent achievement.

“I am so honored and humbled to receive this recognition. It is with great pride and honor to represent Cebu not only in the Southeast Asian Games but in all my international competitions. To be named as a modern hero comes with great responsibility. I am more responsible to be a role model and to continue to be an inspiration to the young generation. As I receive this recognition, it opens my mind to do better and to really work harder,” she said.

She was given the “Modern Day Hero Award” for her exemplary performance in the field of sports.

Tabal, who hails from the mountain barangay of Guba, was accompanied by her father Rolando, who told reporters how proud he is of his daughter.

“I am so happy,” he said.

Tabal offered her recognition to the people who supported her.

Mayor Tomas Osmeña said that despite being petite, Tabal was able to beat the world.

Osmeña said Tabal serves as an inspiration in imparting to the public how to become a winner.

The mayor also turned over a posthumous award to the family of the 21-year-old Crisanto Amoranto.

Amoranto used to work as a crew of a pizza house but was shot dead in Carreta last month after helping foil a robbery incident.

Osmeña said Amoranto sacrificed his life to help the robbery victim.

Gemma Amoranto, mother of Crisanto turned emotional upon receiving the award. She said that up until now, she can't accept the death of her first born.

“For now, his death still hurts me. It will take time for me and my family to heal the wounds of his passing. He has been helpful to others even to the point that he has already put his own life to risk,” Gemma said.

Gemma said that despite what happened, she is still thankful that the city has recognized her son.
