THE University of San Carlos accounting graduate who got the second highest score in the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) Licensure Examinations cared little for his studies in his first two years in college.
Shaun Anthony Tiu Go, 21, spent much of his time playing video games and hanging out with friends. But when he realized that he had disappointed his mother, Go made a complete turnaround.
Go achieved a score of 91.29 in the board exams.
Aside from Go, four USC graduates made it to the top 10 of the board exams. They are Jaecelle Margrett Go Dy (third), Jamaica Marjadas (fourth), Odessa Marie Allera and Rieland Cuevas, both in 10th place.
John Lester Lastimosa and Bridget Diaz of the University of San Jose-Recoletos also landed on the top 10 of the exams.
Go said that he studied harder than his classmates to earn a spot in the top 10. “My batchmates had the opportunity to spend much of their five years in study, while I have to cram everything within three years,” Go told reporters.
During his breaks, he watched cartoons on Youtube.
Go, the youngest of four children of entrepreneurs, said that he had high hopes for the board exams because he scored high in the pre-examination stage.
Challoner Matero, dean of the USC School of Business and Economics, said that aside from having five topnotchers, the university was named a top performing school in the board exams.
USC had an overall passing percentage of 88.06 percent.
Matero credited the university’s success to its global curriculum, introduced in 2006. USC graduates landed in the top 10 of the CPA licensure exams in the past three years.
Matero said that they will reward the topnotchers with a laptop and allow them to choose an appropriate venue.
Topnotchers were offered an opportunity to work for a prestigious auditing firm.
As an advice for future CPAs, Go urged them to never give up. “It's never too late. As long as you study hard and pursue your goals with the right mindset, you can do anything,” he added.
