PLANS are afoot to renovate the 111-year-old Zamboanga city hall building and make it disaster resilient or fire resistant amid the evident signs of global warming.
Doctor Elmeir Jade Apolinario, City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (CDRRMO) chief, said Zamboanga City Mayor Ma. Isabelle Climaco-Salazar had issued a memorandum, directing three offices - City Engineer’s Office, City Planning and Development Coordinator’s Office, and CDRRMO - to work on the rehabilitation plan for city hall building.
“The objective is to make city hall disaster resilient, particularly in addressing fire problems,” Apolinario said.
Apolinario said they already discussed the city hall rehabilitation plan with a group of civil engineers, architects, and other concerned stakeholders.
The city hall was built by the United States in 1905 to 1907 has served as the seat of government of the then Moro Province until 1913.
It has served as the seat of government of Mindanao and Sulu from 1914 to 1920, Zamboanga Province from 1921 to 1945, and Zamboanga City since 1957.
The last time city hall has undergone rehabilitation was in 2004.
