BACOLOD-based Ceres-La Salle FC continued to write history in the Asian football by capturing the second runner-up honors in the 2016 RHB Singapore Cup held over the weekend at the Jalan Besar Stadium in Singapore.
The Philippine side outsmarted Balestier Khalsa, 2-1 with an epic second half comeback on goals by Manuel Ott in the 64th minute and by Stephan
Schrock five minutes later.
Khalsa enjoyed first half advantage with an early fourth minute goal by Niko Tokic.
Club management said Ceres FC’s second runner-up finish is by far the highest honor a Filipino club has ever accomplished in a Singaporean tournament.
Ceres FC fought hard to keep the Philippine flag waiving over Jalan Besar Stadium. Eventually the Busmen lost to Singapore’s Tampines Rovers in the two-leg semis on goal aggregates after the extra time.
Albirex Niigata of Japan defended its title with a two-nil win over Rovers.
Earlier, Ceres FC finished first runner-up finish in the United Football League to clinch another playoff ticket in the Asian Football Confederation Cup next year.
