DEFENDING champion Ceres-University of St. La Salle FC booked consecutive victories to be on top of the table in the ongoing 2nd Sagay Men's Open Championships at the Sagay National High School in Negros Occidental.
The Norman Fegidero-mentored La Sallians blanked host-Sagay North Negros on Sunday, 2-0, on Tristan Kit Robles and Klent Guevarra's goals to fortify their campaign.
The Ceres-backed squad also demolished University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos (UNO-R) in the opening day, 4-0 behind hits of Regie Brenn Cisneros, Ilemona Usman, and pair of goals from Kjay Gedor.
Sagay North Negros surprised the field trailing at second spot with a win, a loss and a draw.
Bannered by several Philippines Football League players, Sagay spanked UNO-R, 2-1 after Jerals Paparon and Jimuel Ariola scored in the 2nd and 17th minutes. Paul Ancheta hit for the Rams in the 40th minute.
Sagay side also stunned visiting Ateneo de Manila University in Day 1 with a one-all draw after Jasper Aguado scored in the 78th minute. William Jay Grierson gave the Blue Eagles an early lead in the 53rd minute.
Reigning tournament runner-up Ateneo shared the next position with Villa Angela FC on a win and a draw record.
ADMU defeated Negros Selection yesterday, 3-1 behind Reno Fekliz Gaudiel's pair of goals and Christian Michael Castillo's. An unfortunate own goal from Joseph Gerard Poe gifted the select Negros XI.
Villa Angela FC also downed Negros Selection, 3-1 off the goals from Aldrin Dolino (21'), Jaime Poderoso (26'), and J Baguioro (75') while Adonis Abela connected a goal for the loser in the 64th minute.
Angela's invincibility was shattered after UNO-R drew two-all.
The top two teams after the eliminations will advance to the finals on Wednesday, January 10.
