THE City Central School Stingers made their presence felt after beating Assumption Montessori School, 64-59 on Saturday’s opening of the 13th St. Ignatius de Loyola Cup 13-under division basketball tournament at the XU gymnasium.
The Stingers of coach Pepoy Jumamoy are on a mission to prove themselves against tougher teams in the league from private institution such as Corpus Christi School, St. Mary’s School, XU Grade School and the visiting Bukidnon Faith Christian School.
They’re bent to prove that their winning of the Cagayan de Oro Inter-Public School Basketball Tournament last season was no fluke.
“We want to test ourselves in an open league nga naa ang mga private schools,” said coach Jumamoy.
In the second game, the Saint Mary’s School-Valencia City thrashed East City Central School, 60-38 in same division of the pre-christmas tourney which also has the 15U and 18U categories.
The Loyola Cup has adopted a ranking format of which the lower seeds can test their mettle in going up to the top.
“Atong gi-utro ang format para mabal-an nato ilang ranking. Bali kung unsa ilang place karon, mao na dayon ilang seeding sunod tuig,” said Arvin Martinez, Loyola Cup commissioner Arvin Martinez.
