ILOILO City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog ordered the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (CDRRMO) to assess and evaluate flood-prone villages and to recommend measures to be made to mitigate further destruction in case of typhoons and heavy rains.
Typhoon Helen has put several villages in Iloilo City under water early this week as flashfloods continue to batter low-lying areas in the city.
Mabilog wanted to know the updated evaluation of villages as the city social welfare and development office prepares emergency food assistance and evacuation centers.
Darwin Papa of the CDRRMO said the initial list of seven villages with severe problems on flashfloods includes villages Buntatala, San Isidro, Democracia, and Simon Ledesma in Jaro district, Sooc in Arevalo district, Calajunan in Mandurriao district.
City proper villages with drainage problems also experienced flashfloods and knee-deep water during heavy rains.
These include villages San Jose along Fuentes and de Leon Streets and Roxas Village fronting the Iloilo terminal market “bagsakan” area.
Mabilog said he wanted to know the flood situation so that corrective measures will be incorporated in the 2017 city budget for flood mitigation projects.
The district engineering office of the Department of Public Works and Highways is finishing up its new drainage system along Delgado St. as part of the city’s drainage master plan.
The second phase will be implemented along Fuentes and de Leon streets near the terminal market and to start before the end of this year.
