BACOLOD City Councilor Wilson Gamboa Jr. has pushed to amend the ordinance establishing the burial financial assistance program for paupers in the city.
Gamboa, who led the public hearing at the City Council Social Hall yesterday, said he filed a proposed ordinance amending Sections 9 and 12 of City Ordinance No. 384, Series of 2005.
The hearing was attended by the department heads of the City Budget Office and the Department of Social Services and Development, among others.
Gamboa said the proposed ordinance is an amendatory ordinance to increase only the amount of the burial assistance given to paupers in Bacolod from P1,500 to P5,000.
“There are many who are saying that some were given P3,000 to 4,000 and some more than P5,000. This ordinance likewise wishes to settle what would be the exact amount that should be given to our paupers and what are the guidelines for the distribution,” he said.
He added it was agreed that the financial assistance should be fixed of P3,500 to be fair for everybody.
Gamboa said he will submit the committee report to the City Council next week and for the approval of the proposed ordinance for second reading.
“The city needs to update its ordinances to be more beneficial to the people and to be responsive to the needs of the city,” he said.
