THE Cagayan de Oro City Council is urging the Department of Public Works and Highways (Department of Health)-Northern Mindanao to put up proper warning signs on its construction projects along the highway.
City Councilor Teodulfo Lao Jr. said warning signs should be visible at night time to prevent accidents.
Lao said he himself observed a particular project at Barangay Lapasan where the contractor only installed makeshift warning signs using only plastic straws.
"So when the rain comes, water overflows in the hole they dug up, and the water levels with the concrete road which makes it appear that there is no hole in the area. Thus, this may cause accidents to pedestrians," he said.
"Safety of the public should always be the priority of the agency and contractor. So we need them to install visible warning signs especially at night, so people driving at night and with impaired vision will see that there's construction ahead," he said.
Aside from the lack of visible warning signs, Councilor Leon Gan also took note of some unfinished DPWH projects.
He said the project takes over a year before the DPWH continue their work, thus becoming an inconvenience to the riding public.
Gan cited the pending drainage project in front a hospital in Barangay Gusa and another in Barangay Puerto.
Gan also criticized a completed but ineffective drainage project in Barangay Consolacion which has been causing the clogging of a canal.
"This is a good project but if they cannot continue, these are all useless, it can become a swimming pool, like the case in Consolacion," he said.
The matter is referred to the committee on infrastructure and calls the attention of the DPWH-Northern Mindanao, which spearheads these projects.
