MUSICALLY inclined persons tend to play instruments like guitar, piano and the likes. But 16-year-old Dineson Cañeda, a Cebuano, is an exception.
Dineson, a resident of Linao, Minglanilla, Cebu, taps pens on the table to create beats while a song is playing. It is the talent he invented for himself.
“Inspired ko sa akong self ra kay naka-invent ko og talent nga unique (I am inspired with myself since I created a talent that's unique),” he said when interviewed by VoxPop Philippines on October 22.
In March 2016, Dineson uploaded a video on YouTube showing him beating to the tune of “Don’t Let Me Down” by The Chainsmokers.
The pop duo, Chainsmokers, noticed his cover in January this year.
Dineson’s video, which was uploaded by The Chainsmokers on their official Facebook page, garnered 11 million views.
Dineson’s video on his got more than 9 million views, as of October 25.
He said he never thought his video would go viral.
“I really was shocked and surprised. Wala ko katuo ba kay ga upload-upload ra ko’g videos unya wa ko ga expect nga ma viral diay (I couldn’t believe it because I was only uploading videos and I didn’t expect it would go viral),” he said.
As for the choice of pens, Dineson said any pen that’s thin and lands comfortably on his hands would do.
He said he can pen tap any song as long as he knows its tune.
Dineson has also made pen tap covers of Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s “Despacito” and Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do.”
Dineson received a “Silver Creator Award” from YouTube in September this year for surpassing 100,000 subscribers.
Aside from pen tapping, which he began at the age of eight, Dineson is also a Taekwondo jin.
He joined the 2016 Gyeongju Korea Open in Gyeongju, South Korea, despite not bagging the award.
He also joined Taekwondo competitions in Kazakhstan and Taiwan.
“I started joining Taekwondo competitions when I was 11. I’m still doing (Taekwondo) until now,” he said.
When made to choose either sports or music, he said: “Akong passion gyud sir, sa music gyud (My passion is really in music).”
Dineson recently auditioned for the Pilipinas Got Talent Season 6 and is looking forward to inspire and make the Filipinos, including Cebuanos, proud. (VoxPop Philippines)
