A TOTAL of P134 million will be allocated for the acquisition of two five-hectare sanitary landfills of Davao City and procurement of equipment for the landfill, a city official said.
In last Wednesday's Business Forum held at a mall in Davao, City Planning and Development Office (CPDO) head Ivan Cortez said with the existing landfill in Carmen near to being filled up, the city is currently scouting for vacant areas specifically in the South and Northeast part of the city.
The establishment of a landfill will allow the city to avoid future piling up of waste in one area only. Wastes will be divided to two different landfills.
A budget of P100 million will be allocated for the purchase of the two sanitary landfills.
Cortez said Panabo City is willing to partner with Davao City for a sanitary landfill project with on-site material recovery facilities.
The remaining P34 million is allotted for the procurement of equipment for the sanitary landfill particularly long arm backhoe with orange peel grab bucket excavator and two water trucks, which is pegged at P8 million per unit.
Aside from the development of sanitary landfills, Cortez also said the city considers entering into a waste-to-energy (WTE) project, needing a
total of 15-hectare land including the sanitary landfill requirement.
"It will prolong the life of the sanitary landfill. Those that have fleeting value and can be burned, will be burned to generate energy," Cortez said.
At present, there had been foreign proponents that had expressed interest to put a WTE project and the city is now evaluating them. One of the factors they are putting into consideration is the tipping fee payment per tons of garbage.
Cortez acknowledged that the environmentalists who are against WTE project in Davao City as it encourages more wastes but he said there are no done deals yet with any WTE proponents as of the moment.
