OROQUIETA CITY, Misamis Occidental -- Andrea Annabela De Guia of Toril, Davao City, raced to win her third gold medal so far in the ongoing Batang Pinoy Mindanao Leg athletics competition in Misamis Occidental Provincial Athletics Center (Mopac) Thursday afternoon.
De Guia, 15-year-old student of Doña Carmen Denia National High School, registered one minute and two seconds to capture the girls 13-15 400-meter dash gold after topping the girls 3,000m and 1,500m in the past two days.
She bested Sweet Joy Pantaleon (1:06) of Koronadal City and Mel Joy Gonzales of Sto. Tomas, Davao del Norte (1:07), who copped the silver and bronze, respectively.
However, winning three golds is not enough for the Dabawenya.
"Gusto nako five golds, kayang 2 sa relay. Gusto man gud nako mag-gold sab akong mga kauban (I target five golds, the other two from relay events because I want that my teammates as well)," she said in an interview with VoxPop Davao.
De Guia thanked her mother, who raised her single-handedly, for her continued support to her sport.
She also thanked her coach and trainer, teammates and the City Government of Davao for sending her here and providing athletes support in meals, uniforms and transportation.
Meanwhile, Renante Catayas of Sindangan ruled the boys 13-15 discus throw with a distance of 29.18 meters, while Al Jherald Takbilani of Hagonoy, Davao del Sur (27.42m), got the silver, and Adriane Taporco of Sto. Tomas, Davao del Norte (27.31m) pocketed the bronze.
Fel Brian Brifanico (12.58m) annexed the boys 13-15 triple jump gold over Melvin Jade Desuyo of General Santos City (12.51m) and Jeshel Van Ombid (12.34m) of South Cotabato.
In 400-m dash, Al-Nhaquiev Sappari of General Santos timed 53.1 seconds to claim the gold as Utoh Amil Sappari of General Santos City (54.3) and Albert Jose Villaces of Zamboanga City (54.5) wounded up for silver and bronze, respectively.
