THE Davao Durians Rugby Football Club (DDRFC) lived up to its billing after sweeping the Dadiangas Generals Rugby Football Club (DGRFC), 3-0, in the recently-concluded Davao Durians Dare Rugby Football Challenge held Sunday, January 22, at the Calumpang Sports Complex in General Santos City.
The DDRFC, coached by Hilton Soberano, blanked the DGRFC 15-0, in their first game before posting a 15-5 victory over the latter in their second clash.
During the third and final match, DDRFC's Carlo Orias scored in the second minute of the first half as Bernard Batulan followed a touch-down in the fourth minute.
RJ Halasan, who is the cousin of Davao Durians superstar James Halasan Ryan, also scored for DDRFC along with Raphael Mancha and Ricky Unao.
Anthony Ronquillo of DDRFC and DGRFC's hooker Lesley Cubrado were hailed as the most valuable players (MVPs) in the event.
Soberano, in an email to VoxPop Davao, said the team leaned on experience from the regular senior players while they also took advantage of the youth and speed from the rookies.
“Improve on one-on-one tackles and fitness as well as work on team dynamics and structure considering the newbies,” Soberano said.
DDRFC was also powered by team captain Le Allen Lara, Uldarico Bande Jr., Bernard Batulan, John Kenneth Cabrera, Jofern Galopo, Carlo June Pilongo, John Paul Pulido, Clinton Jay Rama and Roland John Tanio.
