A 3.1 magnitude earthquake hit Cebu just three days after the third anniversary of the Bohol-Cebu earthquake.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported that around 5 a.m. yesterday, the earthquake occurred 17 kms. east of Liloan with a depth of six kms.
The quake, which was tectonic in origin, was felt strongly in the towns of Liloan and Consolacion and the cities of Cebu and Lapu-Lapu City.
Intensity 2 was also felt in Talisay City, in the southern part of Cebu.
In Liloan, one elementary school in Barangay Yati was damaged after a branch of a century-old mango tree fell on one of the classrooms during the earthquake yesterday.
Dawn
No one was hurt during the incident as the earthquake occurred at dawn.
Hammurabi Bugtai, head of Liloan’s Public Safety and Emergency Office, told Sun.Star Cebu that classes in the school had to be suspended temporarily after the classroom got damaged.
In a separate interview, Liloan Mayor Christine Frasco said no one was injured or killed in the quake yesterday.
Social media exploded into a frenzy in Cebu after netizens felt the tremors from Liloan.
Consolacion
One netizen, Cleopatra Bratinella, posted in Facebook that she felt the tremors from the quake as she lives in the neighboring town of Consolacion.
Another netizen, Jing Kiak, said in his FB post that the tremors woke him up.
But some netizens like Ana Lou Maglasang posted that they didn’t feel the earthquake as they were asleep at that time.
Even though the earthquake that struck Liloan might not have toppled any structures, it invoked painful memories for Cebuanos.
Three years ago, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck Cebu and the neighboring province of Bohol, destroying structures worth P2 billion and leaving more than 200 people dead in its wake.
