MOST of us have heard the term “work-life balance,” and thus became more and more obsessed about it when our parents, friends and bosses (ironically) told us that we should see personal life as something to be savoured upon when we exit our cubicle prison.
But these days, the once who saw the “new light” say that these balance is dead and “work-life integration” has become the headline and the new norm to follow. Is there such a thing?
Since we spend eight hours, five days a week (for others six) at work, can we still achieve at least one ambition from our bucket list while in tucked-in shirts, leather shoes, buttoned sleeves and blazers? Maybe? Yes? We can? We should!
The millennial guru himself puts it perfectly:
“Your job shouldn’t only feed your wallet, it should inspire you to become a better person: for your family, for your society, or for whatever cool start-up company you dream to launch once you leave this job.
Employees who stay longer in an organization are those who learn new things that excite them daily. They are thankful that their organization has brilliant senior executives who mentor their people how to speak confidently.
They have bosses who show them how to win negotiations with strangers. They have HR departments who are obsessed with launching unpretentious Zumba classes or charity programs that toughen one’s personal resilience.
These employees stay because as they spend more time with the company, they discover their real purpose beyond pay checks. “And after all, isn’t purpose is what we’re living this life for?” quipped Jon Yabut.
At the end of the day, work-life integration and work-life balance seem to be the same thing, just anchored in different semantics.
Call it work-life fusion, harmony, flow, flexibility, work-life fill-in-the-blank.
Truth of the matter is, by that definition our work life does not need another term to articulate the same idea of creating a meaningful existence where enjoyment and fulfilment at work co-exists amongst all aspects of our lives -- when all parts are blending together and working towards a greater quality of life.
