DUE TO the continued garbage problem, the Baguio City Government is urging residents as well as visitors to observe the effective environmental practice in the city.
With more than 150 tons of garbage hauled to the sanitary landfill of Capaz, Tarlac, City General Services Officer Romeo Concio said these tons of garbage can be lessened by reducing, reusing and recycling.
"The only way na mabawasan ang basura (to reduce garbage) is to intensify the segregation sa mga bahay (in households) which is to re-use, recycle at maiiwan ang mga ito sa bahay. Pwedeng nilang ibenta. Ang kukukunin lang namin ay ang mga residual na basura o yung mga hindi na pwedeng mapakinabangan lamang dapat (They can sell recyclable materials. We will only get the residual waste)," Concio said.
The City General Services Office reported through segregation, the city is expected to have lower garbage collection.
"Kung may pwedeng i-segregate ay dapat i-segregate pa rin. Malaki na ang pinagbago based on our observation. Malaki na ang na-di-divert natin ngayon, more than 60 percent ang na-di-divert natin through segregation (If there’s garbage to be segregated, we should segregate it. It brought a lot of change in your observation. We have diverted 60 percent through segregation)," Concio said.
Another value everyone should be observing, Concio said, is to have a discipline.
"Disiplina ng tao ang kailangan. Alam natin na kapag bumili tayo ng product ay may na-ge-generate na basura sa packaging. Dapat alam nila ang kanilang role kung saan magbabasura. (Discipline is needed. We all know that when we buy products, it generates garbage),” Concio said.
Through best practices, the city official believed there would be a reduction of expenses of the City Government in transporting the waste of the city to Tarlac. (Ian Jefrey Addatu)
