THE Bacolod City Council approved a resolution seeking the conduct of a study on the possibility of having an exclusive bicycle and motorcycle lane on major and minor roads to avoid or lessen traffic accidents involving motorcycles.
The resolution authored by Councilor Ricardo Tan, approved during the regular session Wednesday, addressed the request to the Bacolod Traffic Authority Office, City Planning and Development Office, and City Engineering Office through Mayor Evelio Leonardia.
Tan said it appears that the most practical way of minimizing accidents involving motorcycles and bicycles is to see to it that an exclusive lane is readily provided along major and minor roads.
“By putting up a motorcycle and bicycle lane, users can conveniently travel from one place to another without of worrying meeting an accident along the road,” he said.
Tan noted that records of Traffic Management Unit showed that from January to November this year, motorcycle accidents increased by 79 percent with 25 deaths compared to 18 deaths in 2016.
He said the data coincide with the fact that the number of motorcycles bought by individuals and companies in Negros Occidental has likewise increased.
“This simply means that despite the danger attached to driving a motorcycle on the road, persons and families especially those who are in the poverty level as well as in the middle class, still continue to use motorcycles as their mode of transportation,” he said.
