A FORMER police asset was arrested after he allegedly tried to extort money from a small town lottery owner in Sitio Bahak, Barangay Poblacion, Liloan, Cebu at 11:40 a.m., Tuesday, August 1.

Superintendent Melbert Glade Esguerra, the town police chief, said they caught the suspect, Leopoldo Ravena Cañete Jr., in an entrapment at a gasoline station.

Cañete, 45, asked for P4,000 from his victim Raymundo Pepito Sasing, 50, in exchange of a promise that the police will not arrest the latter.

Sasing called Esguerra and reported Cañete. The police official told the victim that Cañete is no longer an asset of an intelligence operative of Liloan Police Station.

"Dating asset sa intel diris station, unya wala na karon kay wala naman ang pulis nga iyang gi-assetan. Bag-o na man ang mga pulis sa intel sa Liloan (He was an intel in the station. The police in the intel department in Liloan are all new)," Esguerra said.

Esguerra then planned the entrapment, during which Cañete was caught receiving the amount.

After the arrest, police further recovered a black wallet containing cash amounting to P34,200, a non-professional driver's license, a police intelligence, confidential, and lambat sibat volunteer identification cards, a private security license, and two cell phones. (KAL)
