FREE public Wi-Fi in a total of 10 public areas in Davao Region had already been established by the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) in relation to their goal of expanding their internet connectivity reach to the public.
As of June 21, 2017, 10 areas had been established into public Wi-Fi live sites including Anonang National High School, Mambago-B National High School, Nieves Villarica National High School, Peñaplata Freedom Park, Samal National High School, San Antonio National High School, Tagbitan-Ag National High School, Davao City Hall, and DICT Davao City, and People’s Park.
“This establishment of public Wi-Fi in public areas is our way of addressing what we call the 'digital divide’—people with gadgets but couldn’t connect to internet, people with gadgets but couldn’t afford load, and those who do not know how to use any computer or gadget. These what we are trying to address especially those needing to communicate during emergency cases but do not have load,” Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Field Operations Office–Mindanao Cluster 3 Officer in charge engineer Leo Ugto said.
He added the reach of the internet connection in these public sites are as far as 50 meters. Every gadget can also use up to 100 mbps within 24 hours. User will be automatically disconnected once they reached their 100-mbps limit to give chance to other users.
Ugto said a lot of public areas in Davao Region are already up for approval to be established with free public Wi-Fi and is expected to be implemented within the year.
