LAWYER Lorenzo "Larry" Gadon on Saturday said he will request Congress to allow President Rodrigo Duterte to serve as special prosecutor in the impeachment case against Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno.
Gadon, who filed the impeachment complaint against Sereno, said there is no law barring Duterte from participating in an impeachment proceeding.
He noted that Duterte, who served as prosecutor in Davao City before became its mayor, is a "good prosecutor".
Sereno's camp, in a statement, said Gadon's plan violates role of the House of Representatives to act as sole prosecutors in impeachment cases.
"Atty. Gardon's plan to request Congress to make President Duterte a special prosecutor in the impeachment proceedings against the Chief Justice violates the constitutional role of the House of Representatives to act as sole prosecutors in impeachment cases," said Sereno spokesperson Josalee Deinla.
Duterte earlier said he wants Sereno and Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales impeached as he accused the two officials of allowing themselves to be used by his political rivals in a "concerted effort" to taint his reputation. (VoxPop Philippines)
