IN 1977, Amity Volunteer Fire Brigade was established to help residents of Bacolod City in times of fire, calamities and medical emergencies.
Forty years later, Amity remains true to its mission of extending lives and protecting the aspirations of the people. In a ceremony last Sunday, volunteers and leaders of the organization gathered to kick off its 40th year starting next month.
In a symbolic affair, the Filipino-Chinese community reiterated the partnership between China and the Philippines through the presence of the Consul General of the People's Republic of China to the Philippines She Yong. He bannered the relief programs of the Chinese Government, specifically in Marawi City and other areas in Mindanao, where conflicts and tension arise.
For his part, Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia underscored the forging of ties between the two countries and the significant achievements of the Filipino-Chinese community in Bacolod. He is one in the call of Amity for more fire fighters and medical volunteers who manifest "genuine acts of service and heroism."
The local government of Bacolod will take part in the celebration as a way of showing its gratitude and support to the rescue teams of Amity that have put their lives in danger to save countless people.
Officers and members of the Amity Club were also sworn into office in rites held the newly-opened Market Place Events Center beside the Bacolod Government Center. It was a great deal for the organization which seeks to encourage new members, especially young people to try its various volunteer programs suited for professional and personal growth.
The affair also included cultural presentations from Chinese schools of traditional songs and dances of China. It was a feast to the eyes to see young girls perform with elegance. They have surely mastered Chinese dances by heart, given the kind of support the community gives to Chinese institutions.
“A Listed TV” of Piaya Network Broadcasting Corporation is among the media partners of Amity's 40th year. Next week, a video presentation will be launched to kick off the grand celebration of what is considered the true home of the brave in Bacolod.
The 40th year will also mark more milestones through activities, blessing of equipment, and drills to entice a younger generation of heroes.
