A BOMB disposal team was called to the University of the East-Recto campus in Manila after a street sweeper found a grenade in front of it main gate.

Senior Inspector Arnold Santos, Manila Police District (MPD) Explosive and Ordnance Division chief, said they received a call from a security guard of the university around 5:40 a.m. Monday about a grenade recovered by the street sweeper in front of their main gate.

Santos said an EOD team immediately responded and cordoned off the area where they found a grenade covered with blue electrical tape.

The MPD official confirmed the explosive was an MK2 fragmentation.

Santos said their team was able to safely secure the grenade around 6 a.m.

"Hindi siya capable to explode without detonator, ibig sabihin walang detonator. Kulang 'yung parts pero ito ay naka-safety pa, naka-tape intact 'yung kanyang safety pin," Santos said.

He said they will review the CCTV footages in the area for the possible identification of the person who left the grenade.
