GUAGUA town Mayor Dante Torres assured on Tuesday, January 16, his support for the Special Education (Sped) program of the Department of Education (DepEd), saying that all possible aid will be extended to provide the deaf, hearing impaired, and children with disabilities to get proper education.
This, as Torres visited the class for the deaf and hearing impaired at the Guagua Elementary School in Barangay Santa Filomena. He led the gift-giving for some 20 pupils of the said class in cooperation with his elementary classmates from Batch 68.
Torres said that that they will be according the class with free uniforms this coming school year as well as other needs for the classroom. Hesaid they are seriously considering setting up a Sped class that will cater to the needs for older deaf and hearing impaired students who graduate from their basic elementary education program.
The Sped program of DepEd provides a holistic approach in catering to the needs of learners with various exceptionalities.
This program ensures that learners with exceptionalities will have access to quality education by giving them their individual and unique learning needs.
This initiative caters to learners with visual impairment, hearing impairment, intellectual disability, learning disability, autism spectrum disorder, communication disorder, physical disability, emotional and behavioral disorder, multiple disabilities with visual impairment, and to those who are orthopedically handicapped, chronically ill, and gifted and talented.
Torres said that the need to provide continuing education for Sped pupils necessitates the creation of a Sped program for teens that would finish the regular education provided by the current class in the town.
