MINDANAO schools are in the list of the website "Ranking Web of Universties," which is administered by Cybermetrics Lab of the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas in Spain.
First are the faculty members and researchers of University of the Philippines in Mindanao.
In the list, 453 Filipino scientists were chosen. Six faculty members from the Department of Biological Science and Environmental Studies, three were listed from the Department of Food Science and Chemistry, and five from the School of Management.
In the same website, UP Mindanao is number 12 in the ranking of 100 higher educational institutions in our country.

The planning for appropriate teaching methodology for sexuality education for grade school to high school levels and what and how this should be taught is undertaken by the Department of Education (DepEd) in the K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum.
This particular subject matter must be understood with these first basic principle - the student is a human being with body and soul, the merely physical body and the spirit (intangible) the soul. Involved here is the sense of moral values for an individual.
In the grade school level up to high school there must be a step by step ladder of subject matter and how to teach it is necessary. The teacher teaches in a positive way - just the good notions of what sexuality is.
She should avoid implanting all negative notions as do not let anyone touch your body. It is bad. The child becomes alarmed, malicious, and paranoid. Positive ways are taught by the child herself keeping her body clean, following rules of hygiene, in innocence and clear conscience.
Then this can progress up to high school till she or he knows the physical features of a female and male body.
It can also tackle the role of each in the gift of a married life preceded by having crushes, puppy love, courting, getting steady and finally engaged to someone whom she or he will marry in holy matrimony. This can happen after finishing their college schooling.
Sexuality and reproduction need not be a particular subject. The lessons can be incorporated with science, health, good manners and right conduct, social studies, biology, and home economics.
The teacher should strive to teach the subject with morality and sense of respect for one's self. No vulgar ways like teaching petting and worst, the sex act. My student's comment after my course in sexuality and reproduction said it all: "I thought reproduction was all about genitals, it is not and I learned to love my parents more."
I read about the problems of teenage pregnancy and pre-marital sex. I was shocked to read the purely pragmatic reason why it should be avoided.
The students are forced to stop studying losing the chance to have earnings for living expenses, with complete computation of how much earnings are lost. No mention about morality and sense of a righteous life for teenagers. This should be checked by the right curriculum contents of the planned sexuality education for kids.
Rewards and recognition of students here and abroad are clear indications of the success of our students. We won awards in the mathematics expertise contests. We had awards in the Robotics construction skill.
The latest good news is about a UM student who topped the inventors award in the National Invention Contests and exhibits at the SMX Convention Center.
The research was made by Neil Jamili of University of Mindanao. He got the inspiration when the city government banned the use of non-biodegradable plastic bags.
He researched on sweet potato starch as raw material for biodegradable plastic. He won the Sibul Award for Student Creative Research for College.
The Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Science High School System is a very commendable scholarship opportunity for deserving students all over the country.
I can speak for this program because my granddaughter graduated from the Davao Philippine Science High School. Going to college she passed all entrance tests she took in several universities. She chose UPLos Baños to study her dream career, Veterinary Medicine. I was amused when I saw in her bedroom the sample of her future sign board for her "veterinary clinic" in Davao. She took her on the job training at The Ark (a Veterinary clinic near our residence).
