HIMAMAYLAN CITY -– The Livestock Section of the City Agriculture Office here is pushing for the replication of its poultry breeding project in all 19 villages in the locality.
Jose Rey Tamparong, city veterinarian III, said they are currently working on the establishment of village-based multiplier farms to boost production of stocks in the village level.
The Himamaylan City Government currently operates a 3,000-square meter poultry breeding center in Barangay 3.
Since starting its operation in 2014, the center has already produced at least 3,000 heads of various poultry animals like pekin duck, chicken, mallard, and guinea.
Of the number, 2,140 heads were already dispersed to 152 resident-beneficiaries of Himamaylan while 214 heads were returned to the province as payment for initial stocks.
Tamparong said that under the initiative, the breeding center will provide parent stocks and technical support to the villages, which will take charge of the construction and management of their respective farms.
“By expanding our poultry breeding efforts through the barangays (villages), we will be capable of benefiting more raisers," he said, adding that they target to fully realize the project this year.
The expansion of multiplier farm in the villages is provided under the city ordinance approved last month.
The ordinance also provided the sale of poultry animals from the breeding center for more income generation, conduct of trainings, and other poultry development activities.
Tamparong said they are also tapping barangay officials and non-government organizations like producers and animal raisers associations for possible marketing ventures.
Aside from selling live animals from the center, its surplus supply can also be utilized for value adding like producing pekin duck inasal, which could be the city’s trademark offering like that of Bacolod’s chicken inasal, he said.
“The continued support of the local government plus the income of the farm is really vital in sustaining its operations and realization of future plans,” Tamparong said.
The city veterinarian III added the center also plans to also produce livestock to complement its poultry stocks.
