House okays January 18 as 'Araw ng Kasambahay'

THE House of Representatives has approved on final reading the bill declaring January 18 of every year "Araw ng Kasambahay" (domestic workers' day).

House Bill 6258 aims to give domestic workers recognition and appreciation for their service.

January 18 would be a special non-working holiday, according to the bill.

The bill also provides that in the event that the day falls on a weekend, the holiday shall be observed on Friday of that week.

The principal author of the bill is House Majority Leader and Ilocos Norte Rep. Rodolfo Fariñas.

In a statement, Fariñas said the important role that domestic workers play in the growth of the Filipino society cannot be disputed.

“This labor and social landmark legislation embodies the recognition of domestic workers as heroes in our households, whose rights and welfare should be strengthened, protected and promoted,” he added.

Other authors of the bill are Pangasinan 6th District Rep. Marlyn Primicias-Agabas, Paranaque 1st District Rep. Eric Olivarez Abang Lingkod Inc. Party-list Rep. Joseph Stephen Paduano and ABS Party-list Rep. Eugene Michael De Vera. (VoxPop Philippines)
