AN INMATE involved in a commotion inside the Bago City District Jail in Negros Occidental died on Thursday, January 18.
Senior Inspector Alexander Sy, jail warden, identified the victim as Rene Boy Alvarez, 32, of Barangay 4, Himamaylan City.
He was charged for illegal possession of firearms and explosives, attempted murder, and direct assault.
Sy said Alvarez engaged in a fistfight with his co-inmates a few minutes after he was transferred to Bago jail from Himamaylan City District Jail.
They were pacified by jail officers, but after almost an hour, he was found by his fellow inmate unconscious prompting him to call for assistance.
Alvarez was brought to a hospital, where he was declared dead.
Sy said Alvarez died of intracranial bleeding secondary to head injury due to mauling, based on the medical results.
Alvarez was previously placed under the custodies of Kabankalan City District Jail and Metro Bacolod District Jail-Special Intensive Care Area in Bacolod City, but was moved out because of his involvement in commotion in both jails.
Due to the incident, all 215 inmates were curtailed of visitation privilege and recreational activities while the investigation is ongoing, Sy said.
The jail warden said they have not yet identified the other inmates involved in the commotion, but once the investigation is finished, they will be held liable.
