LABOR Regional Director Johnson Cañete said Monday he is pushing for a fair pay for sugarcane workers at par with other workers to solve the sugar industry’s lack of workers.
Cañete said sugarcane workers opt to be construction workers because of the higher pay and lighter job.
He added that he has received complaints for lack of laborers in sugarcane plantations especially in the province.
Cañete said he will present a proposal to the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board.
“This is just my proposal and the decision will be made the board,” he added.
Cañete said the sugarcane workers should be given pay equal to other workers because they are also paying and buying everything with the same prices.
“The pay distinction should not be applied. (It should) cover all workers either in agricultural, services and others,” he said.
Cañete was at the Capitol Monday for the General Assembly and Assessment of the District Tripartite Council about the Sugar Amelioration Program with the Department of Labor and Employment.
