Lady Bullpups, Lady Chiefs early favorites at 3rd Mendoza Memorial Cup

THE juniors squad of the National Schools served notice to the different universities seeing action in the PVF National Inter-Collegiate Men and Women's Volleyball Championship 2017-3rd Pedro R. Mendoza Jr. Memorial Cup after dispatching University of Baguio (UB) Lady Cardinals in four sets.

The Lady Bullpups, mangled an out of shape reigning Baguio–Benguet Educational Athletic League women’s champion, 25–14, 25–17, 19-25, 25–19 Monday morning at the University of the Cordilleras (UC) Gym.

With University Athletic Association of the Philippines women’s champion De La Salle University skipping this year’s tournament, the weeklong competition gets underway with eight equally talented squads seeing action in the men’s side while six are competing in the distaff side.

The UB, earlier notched its first win with a 25 -22, 27-25, 25-18 dispatching of the National College of Business and Arts (NCBA) in the opening game of the event backed by Monolith Construction and Development Corp., Hanes, UC, UB and the Baguio City Mayor's Office.

In the other women's contest, National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) women's crown holder Ireland university clobbered host UC, 25-18, 25-6, 25-11 while Lyceum of the Philippines University-Manila edged a listless NCBA for their first win of the tournament, 25 18, 25-16, 25-18.

In the men's side, NCBA outscored Bestlink College, 25 - 15, 25-19, 25-21, while Holy Angel University escaped UC, 25-14, 25-23,25-21 with Mapua Institute of Technology edging UB, 25 - 20, 25-15, 25-29 during Sunday's game.

Adamson also jumpstarted their bid by stopping LPU-M, 25-21, 25-17, 25-15.

The UC also edged bitter rival UB in a rematch of this year's BBEAL men's finals as the Jaguars romped off with a four set victory, 25-19, 23-25, 25-19, 25-23 while MIT scored their second victory buy drubbing HAU, 25-14, 25-19, 27-25. (Roderick Osis)
