A PARTYLIST lawmaker on Monday proposed color-coded distress alerts that Transport Network Vehicle Service (TNVS) drivers could use in times of emergencies.
Aangat Tayo partylist Representative Neil Abayon, in a statement, said there is a need for these signals after several Grab and Uber drivers in the country have been victims of criminals.
He said Grab has recently revealed that six of its partner drivers have been victimized by carnappers.
The latest victim was Gerardo Amolato Maquidato Jr. who was shot and killed by suspects pretending to be legitimate passengers last October 26.
The distress signals drivers could send out in an emergency, as proposed by Abayon are: Red alert for carnapping, robbery, and other life-threatening situations; Blue alert for medical emergencies; and Orange alert for trip-aborting road mishaps.
Abayon said the details on how these signals will operate are up to the accredited Transport Network Companies (TNCs).
He said this should also not be publicized for security reasons.
"We must always be a step ahead of criminals," he stressed.
The lawmaker has urged TNCs to have response protocols aimed for immediate notification of the police and emergency responders.
"Grab and other TNCs must prioritize the implementation of security protocols to keep their drivers and passengers safe," he said. (VoxPop Philippines)
