A LOCAL lawmaker is mulling the banning of liquor from 12 midnight onward to curb crimes perpetuated by people under the influence of alcohol.
Cagayan de Oro City Councilor Reuben Daba is bent on authoring an ordinance with stricter penalties that will amend an existing ordinance on the consumption of liquor.
Daba, chairman of the committee on social services and member of the police and public safety committee, said the city may copy and follow the ordinances of Davao City on liquor which is for the common good.
In his proposal, alcoholic beverages will only be served until 11 p.m. from Mondays to Thursdays and only until 12 midnight for Fridays and on weekends.
“Naa naman ta existing ordinances ato na lang i-amend like dili lang siya focus sa minors ang liquor ban but para sa tanan (We already have existing ordinances, we just have to amend it, not only focusing the liquor ban in minors but also to everyone),” Daba said.
Daba clarified the Cinderella last order policy will only include alcoholic drinks but will not include orders of everything else.
“Kung gusto sila magpulutan or mo-order og lain pwede. Ang ilimnon lang gyud ang dili mapagawas after that hour (If they wanted to order food, they can. Only the drinks is prohibited after that hour),” Daba said.
Daba plans to hold a consultation meeting with the establishments, academe and other stakeholders this week to solicit ideas about the proposed ordinance.
“Naa man meeting sa Regulatory and Complaint Board kung aha ipatawag ang mga establishments, mosingit ko para kausa ra nga tawag sa ila (There is a meeting in the Regulatory and Complaint Board if we’ll call the attention of the establishments, I’ll shout once to call them out),” Daba added.
Daba said establishments that will not follow the liquor ban once the ordinance is enacted will be fined P1,000 for the first offense, P3,000 for the second offense and P5,000 for the third offense and revocation of the business permit for the succeeding offense.
He explained the penalty is per bottle sold during the banned period.
Daba said village police will be deputized to enforce the ordinance aside from the uniformed police personnel.
