BORACAY ISLAND, Aklan -- The local government unit (LGU) of Malay is finalizing its solid waste management plan for Boracay and Malay for the next ten years.
Malay Mayor Ceciron Cawaling said the 10-year plan would be presented to the Asian Development Bank (ADB), which would finance the project with a counterpart from the LGU.
“We will present our final solid waste management plan to the Asian Development Bank within this month,” said Cawaling in an interview on Friday, June 2.
The project, with an estimated cost of P300 million is eyed to help solve the garbage problem in this tourists island.
Cawaling said he would be presenting along with the LGUs of Del Carmen, Surigao del Norte; La Trinidad, Benguet and Janiuay, Iloilo which will also be part of the project.
The National Solid Waste Commission and the Department of Environment Natural Resources will also be part of the project.
One component of the project, according to Cawaling, is the establishment of an upgraded centralized material recovery facility in Boracay.
To note, the LGU was ordered by the Environment Management Bureau-Western Visayas of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources to address the accumulation of garbage on its Manocmanoc MRF facility.
The LGU then started hauling the residual waste in the MRF to its sanitary landfill in Kabulihan village.
After its failure to finish the hauling in a month, the LGU requested for another 150 days extension.
However, the EMB-Western Visayas only approved 90 days which will end by July.
In a previous interview with EMB-Western Visayas director Ariel Gloria, he said the LGU was already 70 percent done with the hauling. (PNA)
