A FORMER inmate of Dumaguete City District Jail in Negros Oriental was arrested Tuesday, May 16, after he was caught hiding a big sachet of suspected methamphetamine hydrochloride or "shabu" worth P350,000 in his underwear during his visit to his jailed cousin.
Chief Inspector Prizel Arevalo, city jail warden, identified the suspect as Fernando Flores, 30, of Purok Santan, Barangay Taclobo, Dumaguete City.
Flores pretended to visit his cousin, who is charged for murder, but he was caught by jail guards during a search around 12:45 p.m.
He yielded a big sachet of shabu weighing 31.45 grams wrapped with an electrical tape, and P4,000 cash.
Arevalo said Flores was previously jailed for possession of illegal drugs, but was released in July last year after he was acquitted.
Flores denied bringing illegal drugs to his cousin, the jail warden said.
He will be charged for drug trafficking under the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.
Last week, more than P8 million (not P11 million as initially reported by the jail management) worth of illegal drugs hidden inside coconuts were also seized at the Dumaguete jail entrance.
The illegal drugs were supposed to be delivered to an inmate named Joram Catan, who denied knowledge about the recovered contraband items.
Five days after the incident, his wife, Netchy was arrested at their house that led to the identities of four other suspects after one of the two men, including her minor-son, who delivered the coconuts at the jail was identified through closed circuit television camera footage.
