AT LEAST five people were killed when Tropical Depression "Maring" (international name Doksuri) swept through Metro Manila and surrounding provinces last Tuesday, the state disaster agency said Wednesday.
National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) spokesperson Romina Marasigan said the casualties were from the provinces of Rizal, Cavite, Quezon, and in Pasay City.
The fatalities were identified as brothers Jude and Justine Pundal, who both died in a landslide in Taytay, Rizal; Samantha Zamora, 12, who drowned after a jumping off a river in Pasay City; and a two-month-old baby who died due to a collapsed riprap in Lucena City, Quezon.
Marasigan said a mother was also killed after she leaped into a swollen river in Silang, Cavite to save her children.
She said rescue operations were ongoing for the six of the 13 missing persons after a flash flood hit Calamba, Laguna.
Meanwhile, Marasigan said a total of 2,103 families or 7,549 persons were catered in 116 evacuation centers.
She said the most affected population was from 109 barangays in Metro Manila and Calabarzon regions.
She noted that 169 areas in Metro Manila and Central Luzon have experienced massive flooding due to the continuous heavy rains brought by Tropical Depression Maring. (VoxPop Philippines)
