SAN LUIS -- Three-term Mayor Venancio “Asyong” Macapagal of this town recently turned over a two-storey building donated by his family to a public school.
Macapagal, together with his mother Marie Salome, wife Caroline and children Abhen and Marie Abha, sisters Milagros, Melchora and brother Albert led the turnover of the P1.8-million building to San Luis High School.
The school building was named after the late father of Macapagal, Teodulo, who worked as a carpenter to provide quality education for his children.
Macapagal said that the school building is the realization of his promise to himself that he will provide additional classrooms for the children of San Luis at his own expense once he finishes a full term.
“Nung bagong upo ako sa pagka mayor, sabi ko magdo-donate ako ng classroom para sa mga bata kapag nakatapos ako ng term. Ito, last term ko na ito kaya ibinigay ko na,” said Macapagal who is about to finish his nine-year term in 2019.
He added that the lot where the school stands was acquired during his first term as local chief executive, simultaneous to its conversion from a private to a public school.
San Luis High School Principal I Narcisa Labao, meanwhile, expressed her gratitude to Macapagal and his family for extending their resources for the benefit of the students.
She stressed that the school building is a big help for the education of Luiseño youth since the school is currently implementing a shifting schedule due to lack of classrooms.
